Proposal

Title or working title of project (in form of a question)
How action photography captures and portrays the motions and expressions of a sport or an activity?

Project objectives (e.g. What is the question you want to answer?, What do you want to learn how to do?, What do you want to find out?)
I want to learn how to take professional looking sport photographs with a great intensity and depth to them. I want to find out how other photographers produce great images in what they do and what sort of career I could develop / gain from my hobby. Also what it takes to work in a creative and independent industry.

If it is a group project what will your role be?
It's a single project so I will be producing everything myself.

Reason's for choosing the project (e.g. links to other subjects you are studying, personal interest, future plans, knowledge/skills you want to improve, why the topic is important):
This is a personal hobby I have had outside of college for two years now. I would like to be able to improve my skills in taking photographs of sport and be able to make an outstanding project. The topic is important to me because it is a major hobby when i'm not in college and something I would like to pursue forever and maybe a future career in. I would like to do this probally by gaining work experience with others or doing a university course. This hobby is linked to my A - level photography which has made my hobby in more depth.

Activities to be carried out during the project(e.g. research, analysis, writing, preparing for the presentation, etc):
* I have to research and analyse other sport photographers and their work = 1 - 2 months
* Pitch my idea to the class (Gain audience feedback) = 5 - 10 minutes
* Produce photos and evidence for this project = 4,5,6,7 months
* Analysing evidence = 1 month
* Evaluating and gaining audience feedback = 1 month

What research will you need for your research, write up and presentation (e.g. libraries, books, journals, equipment):
I would need these following things:
* Internet
* Books
* Computers
* Libraries

What your areas of research will cover?
Sport photographers - focus on a couple top photographers and then find some local ones I've said below
Photos
Research of techniques sport photographers use
I would like to interview some local sport photographers and find out some things about where the career could lead to and why they enjoy this particular section of photography.

Milestone one:
* Complete at least three pieces of practitioner research
* Develop + complete first round of product testing
* Make sure of all the above + your proposal form is uploaded to your blog.

Mediums

The mediums I have chosen is photography. There are lots of sub sections that photography divides into, which are the following:
  • Darkroom prints
  • film
  • digital
  • Photo shopped pictures of the above
Then again these divide into lots of different techniques that I could try:
  • projection prints
  • shadows
  • contact prints
  • pinhole photography
  • Depth of field
  • Drawing with light
  • etc
I would like to try as many of these affects as possible and others that have not been listed above. I would like to make my product as diverse as possible.

Targets set for the next couple of weeks

  • Review & revise proposal form
  • Continue research on practitioners
  • Develop some ideas testing :
- What techniques are you using
- What mediums are you using
- Troubleshooting and risks (how to overcome problem)
  • Maintain and complete blog.

Local Sport Photographers

I have found a sport photographer who is based in Hayle, Cornwall. This could be used as a great chance to interview him as this is very close to home and could be done at any time really if he would like to.

Here is a link to his website:

http://lifeinmotionphotography.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16&Itemid=14

He does all sorts of images but most of his work is based on people doing stunts on BMXs and bikes. He also likes to look at ordinary objects and change the perspective of them into something creative. Unfortuantely you can not take pictures from his website as he is selling them on there. Maybe if I do interview him then I could ask if i could use one or two of his images in my project.

I have tried looking for some photographers in the local area on the internet via Google Maps but unfortunately I couldn't find many. I am going to try and look in phone books and see if they can give me more contacts and more possible practitioners to research.

Targets set for this week

Make a list of sports in the local area that you might be able to photograph.

look at sport photography books and find techniques that you like/dislike. ( + evidence )

Get pictures of those photographers I wrote about earlier (their work)

Research Famous Sport Photographers

I have looked at work / pictures by bob martin. He is an amazing sport photographer and has risked his life many times in what he does. He has taken pictures of horses jumping over his head, motorbikes speeding right by him. He does this in all of a split second. I think some of his images have a possibility of being edited such as the sheep jumping, catching a Frisbee in a perfect landscape. It could be real, but it would have to of been really expensive to do this. His photography inspired me because his work is not just about capturing the image at the right second, it is about creating a dreamlike state where the picture looks to good to be real.

Here are a few images that he did:

Another Famous sport photographer is Dave Black. He has photographed images for practically every sport; football, basket ball, horse racing, ice skating. I think Dave black takes pictures of more suttle sports rather than rugby or contact sports. He has a more elegant but dark style as he is always using blues, red and blacks. I think he does this to make the person and sport stand out and make that be more of a focal point than the background or bright colours. It is only a little trick but creates a dramatic mood in the image. This is why his work caught my eye as his work is dark and unlike other artists in the fact of dull but empowering backgrounds.

Here a few of his images:

I have found a sport photographer called Adrian Myers. He has done many photographs and has a lot of published work; in newspapers, adverts and other mediums. His shots are again very different as his photos are all done in a studio with backgrounds and un-natural floors as you can see on the two below. His backgrounds are very over the top which also gives the perception that they are unreal. With the rugby image below he gets actors to do a series of tackles, picks the best one and edits it in photo shop. When I say edit I mean add a background and edit the image so it looks like the actor fits more into the picture. He inspired me because his pictures aren't about the sport so much, but about the editing that goes into it. The editing does work though as it creates a bigger impact on the sport, such as the man jumping below. It creates an illusion that he is jumping really high but this is just a picture for the background not actual Hawaiian trees.

Here is some of his work:

I found another man who does sport photography. He is only 16 and already done amazing photography for big publications such as twilight, famous musicians and others. The reason I have chose him is because he uses amazing Photo shop skills and some of these I could research and use these techniques and incorporate them in my photographs to create interesting effects. He is quite diverse when it comes to his work as he has done many styles as the above and also African images.

Introduction

We have started to think about and make our Extended Project Qualification. I am still considering what ideas of what I could do my project about but I know I want it to be in the mediums of film or photography.

I am thinking about about doing a project on nature in Cornwall or doing it about my interests in photography and graphics. I also have a great idea about making a poster for an upcoming event and also a massive photo collage on my sport photography. I am going to do my project on sport photography. I will look into other sport photographers and interview others to gather research on how they work and what sort of career you can gather out of this particular hobby.

For a product I could make I would like to design a poster for a sport event. I would use images I have taken in sport photography and use graphic design to make a really exciting and professional poster. This could be used for a collaboration I work for. I would also make a huge A1 collage of all my best images i have taken. I will probably add some text in areas to explain my feelings in this hobby and what it takes to do this properly.
Here is my Question:
How action photography captures and portrays the motions and expressions of a sport or an activity?
