Proposal

Title or working title of project (in form of a question)
How action photography captures and portrays the motions and expressions of a sport or an activity?

Project objectives (e.g. What is the question you want to answer?, What do you want to learn how to do?, What do you want to find out?)
I want to learn how to take professional looking sport photographs with a great intensity and depth to them. I want to find out how other photographers produce great images in what they do and what sort of career I could develop / gain from my hobby. Also what it takes to work in a creative and independent industry.

If it is a group project what will your role be?
It's a single project so I will be producing everything myself.

Reason's for choosing the project (e.g. links to other subjects you are studying, personal interest, future plans, knowledge/skills you want to improve, why the topic is important):
This is a personal hobby I have had outside of college for two years now. I would like to be able to improve my skills in taking photographs of sport and be able to make an outstanding project. The topic is important to me because it is a major hobby when i'm not in college and something I would like to pursue forever and maybe a future career in. I would like to do this probally by gaining work experience with others or doing a university course. This hobby is linked to my A - level photography which has made my hobby in more depth.

Activities to be carried out during the project(e.g. research, analysis, writing, preparing for the presentation, etc):
* I have to research and analyse other sport photographers and their work = 1 - 2 months
* Pitch my idea to the class (Gain audience feedback) = 5 - 10 minutes
* Produce photos and evidence for this project = 4,5,6,7 months
* Analysing evidence = 1 month
* Evaluating and gaining audience feedback = 1 month

What research will you need for your research, write up and presentation (e.g. libraries, books, journals, equipment):
I would need these following things:
* Internet
* Books
* Computers
* Libraries

What your areas of research will cover?
Sport photographers - focus on a couple top photographers and then find some local ones I've said below
Photos
Research of techniques sport photographers use
I would like to interview some local sport photographers and find out some things about where the career could lead to and why they enjoy this particular section of photography.

Milestone one:
* Complete at least three pieces of practitioner research
* Develop + complete first round of product testing
* Make sure of all the above + your proposal form is uploaded to your blog.

Mediums

The mediums I have chosen is photography. There are lots of sub sections that photography divides into, which are the following:
  • Darkroom prints
  • film
  • digital
  • Photo shopped pictures of the above
Then again these divide into lots of different techniques that I could try:
  • projection prints
  • shadows
  • contact prints
  • pinhole photography
  • Depth of field
  • Drawing with light
  • etc
I would like to try as many of these affects as possible and others that have not been listed above. I would like to make my product as diverse as possible.

Targets set for the next couple of weeks

  • Review & revise proposal form
  • Continue research on practitioners
  • Develop some ideas testing :
- What techniques are you using
- What mediums are you using
- Troubleshooting and risks (how to overcome problem)
  • Maintain and complete blog.

Local Sport Photographers

I have found a sport photographer who is based in Hayle, Cornwall. This could be used as a great chance to interview him as this is very close to home and could be done at any time really if he would like to.

Here is a link to his website:

http://lifeinmotionphotography.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16&Itemid=14

He does all sorts of images but most of his work is based on people doing stunts on BMXs and bikes. He also likes to look at ordinary objects and change the perspective of them into something creative. Unfortuantely you can not take pictures from his website as he is selling them on there. Maybe if I do interview him then I could ask if i could use one or two of his images in my project.

I have tried looking for some photographers in the local area on the internet via Google Maps but unfortunately I couldn't find many. I am going to try and look in phone books and see if they can give me more contacts and more possible practitioners to research.
